Cute coffee place that isn't Starbucks. Good cappuccino.

free wi-fi, no pressure to ever leave. so I should have no complaints. but I still do... the baristas are absentminded. the chairs are off balance. the outlets are few and far between. everyone else was camped out there too so moving to a better spot isn't even an option. i'm sure there are better options in town, but then again i shouldn't complain.

Was visiting for a conference and had a great latte (as in Stumptown or Blue State Coffee great). Staff was friendly, vibe was good, the seating was varied and comfortable, and they have WiFi, which I never take for granted. Wish that their food selection was slightly larger, but for what they offer, they do it very, very well. Best coffee shop in town in my opinion.

Love the coffee here. As an alum, now get there far and few too often. The americanos are great and while visiting recently, had a pumpkin apple muffin that rocked. Service in the morning was outstanding but when I ducked in later that day, the two individuals behind the counter were fairly inattentive and acted like I wasn't worth their time. Despite even after paying for my drink (and tipping), when the young lady handed me my tasty beverage, she said absolutely nothing to me and looked away. That irked me. People commented in other reviews about how people "camp-out" and yes, I was one of those individuals once. Only as a 33 year old can I see the frustration when one tries to get some half and half and has to step over a charger cord in the process. Saints is good, as long as you can get past the spotty service and navigate the obstacle course of power cords and enlightened individuals. I would recommend hitting it at 8 AM on a sunday morning and watching the world wake up through the front window.

Great place to just sit, work, chat and enjoy an afternoon. Awesome coffee too. Small and cozy. Love local coffee shops.

I posted up at Saints Cafe to get some work done while I was visiting in town. I had a wheat germ muffin, a soy latte and some peach tea in my multiple hour duration there. All very good. It's a great creative, cozy atmosphere...but I have to say, the organization and lack of space to move really detracts from everything this place has going for it.

Favorite coffee shop in State College. I work from home so spend a lot of time here taking advantage of the free wifi. Funky and cool and always enough people inside or walking by the big windows to keep you entertained. They have some good healthy snacks and their coffee drinks and teas are fantastic! Plus, unlike a lot of places in State College, they are REALLY friendly and nice!

Anyone who would put down this place's coffee has no idea what they're talking about. As an avid coffee drinker, I'd place saint's house blend within my top five cups of coffee, ever. The atmosphere is awesome, and the music they play is great - usually jazz or classical. Their tea is also phenomenal, and their pastries supplied from a local baker. My only complaint is that the place is constantly packed, and finding a seat is usually hard, or awkward, as it's pretty tight. However, this should also be considered a tribute to the quality of their goods.

Saint's is the only, I believe, coffeeshop in town that serves Clover coffee, which is definitely a plus. Wi-Fi is free, and the baked goods always look tasty. A minus: their hours, which don't lend themselves to sundown studying, and their lack of "normal" tables. It's hard to do any serious reading/work in a high, lowbacked barstool chair.

  • Courtney L.

Saint's Cafe appears to be the only coffee shop in State College that can get my Iced Americano done correctly. My main problem is the iced coffee cups are too small! I'm done with my coffee in about 5 sips. Its a real bummer.

  • Susan L.

i love the coffee and especially the ambience at saints. their hours are basically 9-5, with the exception of monday night - open until 9p. daytime hours mean i never get to enjoy them. would love for them to stay open to 9p more nights a week!

  • Bora L.

I like the atmosphere of Saint's so I enjoy sitting there chatting with my friends. However, I wouldn't go there for coffee. I had normal coffee in a mug (which should normally taste better than coffee in a disposable cup) and it tasted VERY bad. It was bitter and I could not taste the flavour of the coffee. This is not how good coffee tastes like. Good coffee should be aromatic and can be rich in flavour without having the bitterness the hinders the true aroma of the coffee. Nevertheless, I gave 3 stars instead of 2 because the food was pretty good. I tried a quiche and it was very good. They warmed it up for me and served it with a few grape drops.

Dear Latte lovers... come here!! they make it with love!

Here's a question I ask myself when evaluating a coffee shop: how's the coffee? At Saint's, it now comes from Intelligentsia, which Jeffrey Steingarten has called "exceptional" and "wonderful," as well as Metropolis. Don't like coffee? A cup of the Intelligentsia Brazil, mild and clear yet potent and complex, converted me from a strict tea loyalist. Other varietals may also have this power, and sourcing changes seasonally. Though the coffee is already marvelous when prepared conventionally, a high-tech Clover machine yields a consistently perfect brew. Saint's appears to be the only place in State College where this is an option. Cream-and-sugar types might discover they like the stuff black. The baked goods are of relatively high quality, but such things are a gamble at any coffee shop. Here, as in most joints, they tend to stay in the case past their prime. If you were considering putting soy milk, artificial sweeteners, or flavored syrup in your coffee, you should know that a range of Rishi teas is also available. Just saying. The recent bean upgrade makes this the best coffee shop in State College, period. If you need a place to study that stays open late, try the library. It's through those gates on Allen Street.

As everyone here has said, the atmosphere is great and it's the perfect place to get some work done (great WiFi). However, the staff is hit-or-miss on friendliness (two were very good, and two were eh...). And the pricing doesn't make sense at all. It's faux-"green." The mug is more expensive vs. the paper to-go cups and they charge you another $1.00 for a mug re-fill. Plus, their pastries are over-proced for what they offer. That said, the coffee cake is ridiculously good...

  • Christen M.

Excellent coffee and espresso in a charming spot. They serve black cat espresso(!), and another kind that was equally tasty. We ended up going there three times in a row -- and my soy cappuccino was excellent each time. They even have the clover! A welcome NYC-coffee shop-esq find in Happy Valley.

Every college town has one: cafe pretentious. I used to go here all the time when I was a grad student. Yes, I was one of those people taking up a high top table for HOURS just hoping to get one of the primo seats on the couch with the large table. It was a good place to get some work done, and the coffee was decent. I never ate too many things from the pastry section, but what I did have was always good and fresh. Went back this past weekend and not much has changed - except the faces.

  • M S.

I'm being generous with the one star. It is given because it has a clover coffee machine. My husband finds his coffee good. Their food is horrible. I just tasted the worst quiche of my life. I rarely dislike any quiche. Their baked goods do not even look appetizing.

    (1)
  • Hayley B.

Great little cafe. Excellent coffee-- especially if you ask for the clover coffee (a little bit pricier) and tasty baked goods (especially the tarts and cakes.) Cozy atmosphere, although sometimes a bit crowded. It's a really nice place to grab drink and meet a friend.

    (4)
  • travis f.

Seriously tasty espresso. Lots to tables inside (feels a bit crowded) but on a nice day the outside seats are nice.

  • G. S.

As an out-of-towner in town to visit the in-laws, I was looking for a comfortable joint to get a bit of work done. A friend recommended Saints and I've been back three times in less than a week. Free wi-fi, excellent coffee (the Clover-made coffee particularly recommended), good prices, and a comfortable environment. I wish I could report that I've gotten half my thesis written here (like fellow yelper k.i.) but alas... I'm writing Yelp reviews instead... ;-P The only downside to this place is that they close early, especially for a college town.

    (5)
  • Art A.

I've been here several times and everytime they make my double wet cappuccino perfectly. I've had their clover coffee before and it's pretty good, but pricier than their regular java. Plus it's a great place to read/work especially in the summer when the undergrads are gone. It does have a slightly more "bougie" feel, more so than other places in town, but it's a welcome contrast to the buck down the street.

  • Austen T.

Saint's Cafe was my favorite cafe in State College, and it's probably the only one with quality coffee as far as I can recall. The staff is really nice and friendly. The atmosphere is great. Sometimes it's a bit packed, but I was always able to find a place to sit. I'm not sure why they don't make it more well known, but you can get your espresso-based drinks made with Black Cat Espresso which I find to be better than their normal espresso bean. It doesn't cost any more either. If you really want to try something good, and don't care too much about your health, order a breve which is like a latte but made with half and half instead of milk.

    (4)
  • Dianna D.

One of the things that popped out to me is that they have Intelligentsia beans, which are all the way from Los Angeles. Had a cup of coffee with some cream and felt the taste was just blah. Maybe it was too inundated with cream or the beans weren't fresh, but either way, not impressed. Overall service was ok, but the place is crowded, with maybe 10 or so tables crammed into a small space and people speaking to each other at such close length. Great for grabbing a cup of joe with a friend to talk, not that great if you want a quiet place to study.

  • Mike M.

When you have 20,000 kids, like I do (translated: 3 kids at home, 1 moved out and post 18), then you have to experience everything with that as part of it. You can't go anywhere without some consideration of your kids. In my case, I take them everywhere because I don't really have family around or any babysitters. So, with that in mind, I took the kids on the trek to State College. I had to get some things and decided to make a stop at the local comic shop.z So why not go to one of the State College coffee shops? Saint's is right around the corner from the Comic Swap so, why not there? Post comic shop, what time is it? COFFEEE TIIIIMMME!!! My new favorite crack drink is the Americano. That is exactly what I planned to get. Any time I go to a shop on this section of Beaver, I use the lot on the corner of Fraser and Beaver. There is a parking garage but I think it is cheaper to use the metered lot if you are under an hour. I could be wrong but this is what I do. We walked from the Swap to Saint's. No problem finding it. It is on the left hand side of the Canyon. (Local slang for this stretch of Beaver Ave.) Immediately, I noticed outside Cafe seating. That is one for the plus column but not on this hot day. Upon entering the cafe, I noticed smooth jazz, college kids, a beautiful antique wooden table in a corner and everything else modern style other than the cool old school brass topped table at the cash register where a young girl was taking orders. Let me start with the service.... meh.... the young girl was adequate. No small talk, there. Not much in the way of friendliness. The barrista actually making the drinks seemed incredibly warm and friendly. My guess is, in the Summer, your gonna get what you get in that regard. Honestly, that is the only real negative I have for the place. It wasn't like the clerk was rude. She wasn't. Just not seemingly overly thrilled to maybe wait on a guy with questions about the menu, someone with kids, or maybe someone pushing 40. Maybe it was just anyone. I don't know. But she didn't make any extra effort. Maybe she didn't like her job. But that isn't really my problem. I was probably nicer and more respectful than any college age kid. So, with that, no tip in the jar and what would be a 5 star review is 4. I bought the girls peanut butter cookies. My boy got a raisin cookie. They were big hits. Just the Americano for me. Let me just say, this was the smoothest cup of espresso related drink I ever had. They definitely use some premium stuff. This thing was absolutely perfect. It almost shocked me, it was so good. It was the perfect temperature for sipping. Most coffee shops make these things way too hot. Not Saint's. This is the only coffee shop I have ever been to that got it this right. I can't say enough about it. I will return here just for that Americano. It was amazing. As for the rest of the menu, it was pretty standard coffee shop. There were some awesome looking baked goods. Prices were on the mark. So, service is adequate. Atmosphere is win. Decor is win. Location is win. Menu is win. Tastes are amazing. It makes this place a must visit for now on.

  • Michael W.

I wanted to like Saint's as a whole, the coffee is decent as compared to the other options in town, however if you go while school is in session you will not be able to sit down to enjoy the atmosphere. I really wish they would get rid of wi-fi because most of the time you see people on face book with a empty cup of coffee. There are specialty drinks and pastry items available if you do happen to find yourself there during a time when it isn't full of laptops.

  • Sylvie D.

This place has a lot of potential - it has a good location with outdoor seating thats fairly quiet, a cute small interior thats decorated wih character, and they claim that they use Intelligentsia beans. They also are one of the few non-starbucks stores to have a Clover machine. If these last two things are true, then there is some serious problems with the baristas... their espresso tastes horrible most of the time and often you get tons of grinds in your cup, especially with the iced drinks. The staff are routinely the most unfriendly and snarky people you can find in a town full of that kind of person. Even if the coffee was the most amazing cup Ive ever had in my life, I would not come back. You feel as if they wish they could throw a cup of coffee in your face while simultaneously ripping your wallet out of your hands because you are clearly taking way too long and interrupting their facebooking. Importantly, you must be reserved to the fact that you will never, ever get a seat if students are in town. I understand wanting to work on your computer but social etiquette is completely lost here. I think people come at opening, buy one cup of coffee and stay until close. Which reminds me, they close so early in the day its almost silly. Because of its cuteness, I keep trying this place... maybe twice a year but always end up at the same conclusion. Why bother.

  • Lauren B.

If you are looking for some flavored latte, this is your place. But if you are looking for a simple, good cappuccino then this absolutely isn't your place. I really want to like the cafe because of its cute and cozy atmosphere. However I have tried three times now, and every time my cappuccino has tasted like an over roasted latte

    (2)
  • Kevin L.

This place is one of the only several place in state college that do have some good coffees. if you do like the strong roasted coffee taste. I'd definitely recommend this one. Their latte has a creamy strong coffee aroma that i cant resist.

  • Jordan W.

Get the quiche! A lady comes in each day with all homemade treats and they've always been good. Sometimes it's really crowded and if you need an outlet you may not find one close. There are power strips all over to help!

  • Benjamin M.

Saint's is definitely a college town cafe. Look around and all you see is tables full of students, backpacks and laptops. Oh, but fortunately there's also the delicious coffee which obviously draws them all in. Well, that and the free WiFi, of course. In my case, it was a beautifully made mocha latte, as well as the pumpkin apple muffin, which were satisfying and perfect for a mid-afternoon snack to hold my stomach over until dinner. Their prices are comparable to the typical Starbucks, but I always prefer the independent shops over the chains if the product and service are on point. Done and done.

  • Frank S.

Best coffee and lattes in town by far! I love to get their vanilla latte and sit outside with my dog. They're pastries and coffee are gourmet and taste like it. Great regular American coffee too.

    (5)
  • Rachel Z.

Best lattes in State College, I order a soy latte and it is perfect every time. Bring a book or a friend, order your latte for here and stay to soak up the cool ambiance.

    (5)
  • Mark D.

If you're looking for unfriendly baristas, you've come to the right place. The atmosphere was good, the latte I had was fair at best. Meh.

  • Mary Y.

I'm usually a Starbucks drinker but there are days when I want to support local cafes. The espresso here is really delicious. (Black Cat, I think it's called) If you "dine" in, your beverage is in a mug and for those who order lattes, get ready, they do LATTE ART! I do think I get more liquid/milk with a to-go however. (Not positive but it seems like the mug is smaller than a paper cup) They don't have fancy-schmacy ordering system. You just ask for a latte with such and such milk with such and such flavored syrup. Or just plain coffee. The cafe is relatively small but I've never had a problem finding a seat. There's also free WI-FI. They have sugar-water/syrup which I think is great for Iced coffee instead of trying to dissolve sugar crystals. Bakery items are decent, some are better than others and there are some relatively healthier options. And I believe they have sell some lunch items, although I've never tried any personally. Metered parking is available across the street.

  • Aliza R.

Great atmosphere!! They made me a matcha chai latte per my request. It was fabulous- and even better that they were truly excited to try something new!! It made my entire experience. The staff is lovely. The French influence is refreshing! Looking forward my next tea there

If I were asked to find the most academically productive building in State College, I probably wouldn't go to the Penn State campus first but rather to Saint's Cafe. During my visit, in addition to seeing all those people pecking away at their laptops, I also witnessed quite a few academic and technical conversations (presumably between students and faculty members) that went WAY over my head. It has to be one of the most work-friendly coffee shops I've been in. Why? It has (1) bright lighting, (2) plenty of plugs, (3) good wi-fi, (4) a large table in the back, and (5) coffee that ain't bad. But Saint's is truly a good coffeehouse as well, not just an extension of the Penn State library. The drip brewed coffee was good, and I was also a big fan of the apricot scones. They weren't overly crumbly and could be eaten with a fork (almost like cake). Saint's is the type of place I'd come back to again. Though probably not during final exams...

    Best Chai Latte ever!

Hidden behind the hustle and bustle of Starbucks is where you can find Saint's Cafe. This spot is a nice independently owned coffee shop, which actually produces coffee with character. You won't find any watered down drip coffee here, and the espresso drinks are made with care. I stopped on by here the other day to buy some coffee beans to make coffee at home. Here, they carry their own blend, Metropolis Coffee, and Intelligentia Coffee. One pound of coffee ran me $20 per pound. In addition, there are some pastries here and there if you end up getting hungry. There is a good amount of seating considering the size of this place, and there is free Wireless Internet. The staff here is pretty nice, and usually the lines are only about 3-5 people long. Come support your local coffee shop and stop by Saint's Cafe. It's a great place to spend your mornings on the weekend, or get some studying done during the weekdays.

  • Carolyn M.

Saint's is my favorite coffee shop in my hometown, it really is as good as it gets in this area. The quality is excellent and they offer my favorite bottled juice when I want something different. They also have a small but good selection of bakery items. I had a spinach quiche that was tasty and about four different scones. I believe The Pump Station out in Boalsburg was opened by the same people, and I find the café section pretty similar. They do offer freshly prepared hot food (mostly sandwiches) in Boalsburg in addition to the bakery items, which I wish Saint's would do as well, (hint hint if you're reading this, owners). Free wifi, metered lot across the street turned into a kiosk lot that takes credit cards and cash, $2-5 for drinks usually. I never spend more than $10, even if I get food. Gets really crowded, especially around exams, so finding a table isn't always easy.

  • Yaima R.

Never tried their food so I cann't comment on that but their cappuccinos are delicious and oh soo fresh. It's one of my favorite locations to sit and do some studying in downtown, even though it's usually packed with people sitting around using their laptops it's never noisy.

Poor service by the Manager or Owner. I arrived at Saint's Cafe 10 minutes prior to my meeting time. The Manager or Owner watched me as I got my laptop and papers out. When I approached her by saying "Good morning, what is the wifi key", she responded "the wfi key is Saints 123 for "customers"". I said thank you and walked away. I was a little annoyed that she felt the need to tell me the wifi for was paying customers. So I re-aproached her to clarify. She re-stated the password (with an annoyed look on her face). I said you assume I'm not a customer. She replied I don't see you with a drink. to which I replied "I'm waiting for the person I'm meeting before I order." This normally wouldn't bother me; however, it is a slow day in town...Thanksgiving break...so not busy, tons of empty seats. There are quite a few people here working without "drinks" in front of them...maybe they drank their tea or coffee prior tome coming in. In any case I'm offended and put off by the Manager's/Owner's comments and un-couth behavior.

A damn good espresso and a great pumpkin muffin recommended by the baker herself. Next time I'm in state college I'll definitely be back.

Good cozy coffee shop in State College. Their selection of coffee and tea is good. Like any other typical coffee shop Saints has several different seating areas, some facing the street so you can peek at all the passersby or some sofas to relax and just have a good time. There is free Wi-Fi so if you want to come with your computer and connect you wont have a problem with it.

    (4)
  • Rodney L.

really good and hot chai lattes. Small but has a lot of seating.. although people seem to camp out here for hours meaning you probably won't get one of these seats. Once the old Websters closed I swear this place got ALL their business and became too crowded for me.

    (4)
  • Sarah G.

Cute, cozy place with good vibes. The latte and mochas are great. Baristas were really friendly. I'd definitely revisit!

    (4)
  • Andres L.

$2.35 for a medium, 16 oz. cup of coffee. But it was really good. They had bakery items and other specialty drinks available. If I had a bigger wallet, this would be a repeated 5 stars.

    (4)
  • Cindy L.

I wanted to like this place a lot. I enjoyed everything I ordered here, but it gets really crowded. This is one of those places where people come and order one thing and then stay there forever.

    (3)
  • Maya W.

Decent coffee, cakes, quiches, and tea. Pretty overcrowded during working hours and the music is usually played much too loud to a distracting level. Will come again, just with a nice headset and less expectations in regards to stretch out and work/dining space.

  • Tony J.

This is the perfect little cafe in a town that is truly a Happy Valley. I came here the morning after my first visit to the crazy college town that is Penn State, and I feel in love with the shop. The baristas were kind, the coffee was great, and the prices were not too outrageous. Not to mention, they have the most delicious looking treats and pastries! Did I mention they have mini jars of jams and containers of Nutella for you to buy! Awesome!

    (5)
  • Eileen S.

deliciously crafted lattes and free wifi. a winning combination.

    (4)
  • Matt K.

I had some free time while in town and stopped in; I was lured by free wi-fi to catch up on some work. The staff was friendly, or at least one of the baristas was. The other seemed a little busy. I don't know if the wi-fi password is regularly posted, but just ask someone at the counter. The internet connection was good and the chai latte was tasty!

  • Walter K.

This place looks like it should be in a movie. It's picturesque. On top of that, they have friendly staff, delicious coffee, and giant biscotti. Cool spot.

    (4)
  • Kedar D.

Saints has great atmosphere and friendly service. They have a good selection of teas and coffees, though their chai, sadly, is not vegan (the powder mix they use---Big Train Chai---contains whey, a milk protein). They also offer pre-packaged vegan cookies, which is a nice touch. My biggest gripe would be that they close too early (6 p.m.) each day.

    (3)
  • Megan K.

Excellent Coffee house, homey atmosphere, great service, and truly excellent coffee and my personal favorite there is the Cappuccino!!!
